Exhibit 8 - Real World Project
Digital Display
Design
Background: The purpose of this project was to create an attention-getting digital display for Utah State University to inform students of an upcoming deadline for the next semester. The design needed to be easy to read within 20 seconds of display time. In approaching this project I knew that I wanted something that was very simple that could be read, understood, and taken in comfortably by the viewer in the time that they have. As the purpose was to be displayed across campus I wanted to create something that would be able to tie back to USU as well.
Contrast: White font was used to make the text stand out and a drop shadow was added to further make the shadow stand out.
Alignment: Everything was left aligned as the eye naturally moves left to right to help make it easier to read.
Repetition: The same formatting was used for all the text, including color, style, & drop shadow.
Proximity: The text was kept close together for the main purpose of the display and there was space added before the additional reminder for students was added.
Font: Arial Black
Color Scheme: Complementary using blue and yellows.

Photoshop
I began by searching what deadlines are coming up for students for the spring semester. I was able to find the deadline for scholarship applications opening. I then googled images for scholarships. Once I found an image that I liked, I created a new file in Photoshop, 1920 px by 1080 px. I opened the image in this layer and resized it to fit the project size. I then created a new fill layer using the patterns. I chose a pattern from the Artist Surface options.
I moved the fill layer beneath the scholarship image. I created a layer mask for the image layer and used a soft, large brush to go over the edges of the image. I tested different blend modes for the layers but the normal looked best. I felt that the image was missing something and I wanted to tie the image to USU so I googled images of Old Main. This image was opened in the file between the scholarship image and the fill layer. I used the multiply blend layer to darken the image and help it to stand out more.
I then added and formatted the text. I chose the font color by using the eyedropper to use a white color in the image. I felt that the text didn't stand out very well so I added a drop shadow to the text to help it stand out. After receiving feedback it was noticed that there was a grammatical error with some punctuation missing. I was able to correct that.
